Ortiz 'borderline' Hall of Famer

Pete Rose isn't known to sugarcoat anything, so when asked if David Ortiz was worthy of induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, his answer was stinging.

“Borderline,” Rose said before the All-Star Game Tuesday,  via NESN . “Because of how many hits he has. But if he plays a couple more years, he’s a cinch.”

The answer is surprising, given that Ortiz has 525 home runs (19th on the all-time list) and 1,713 RBIs (23rd) to go along with his career .286 batting average and 618 doubles. However his 2,400 career hits are apparently not good enough for Rose, who is the MLB career hits leader with 4,256.

There are currently 112 players who’ve amassed at least 2,400 hits in their career like Ortiz. Of those players, 65 are in the Hall of Fame (58%), eight are still active and likely inductees Derek Jeter, Chipper Jones, Manny Ramirez, Vladimir Guerrero and Pudge Rodriguez have not yet been eligible.

Ortiz is leading the AL in doubles, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS this season, which he has said will be his last.  Despite Rose's opinion, Ortiz would appear to stand a good chance of becoming the first designated hitter enshrined in Cooperstown.
